Ariana Grande is closing out a two-year gap between albums with a title she’s been quietly seeding since 2025 — and this time, she’s turning a Manhattan storefront into part of the campaign.
“Petal,” Grande’s eighth studio album, arrives July 31 via her own BabyDoll Music imprint and Republic Records. To mark the release, UMusic Shop NY is running a three-day “Petal Takeover” from July 31 through August 2, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, at the label’s flagship store at 2 Penn Plaza, just steps from Madison Square Garden.
A Title Two Years in the Making
Grande first teased the word “petal” in a March 2025 Vogue interview, describing herself as a flower that keeps growing new petals, leaves and buds. The name resurfaced again in a promotional video for her R.E.M. Beauty line, when a lip gloss named “Petal” prompted a knowing look between Grande and her mother, Joan.
The album itself was recorded between January and April 2026 across Jungle City in New York and Godzilya and MXM in Los Angeles and Stockholm, executive produced with longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh alongside Max Martin. It follows 2024’s “Eternal Sunshine” and its 2025 reissue, “Brighter Days Ahead,” and arrives after Grande spent the interim finishing “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” and picking up other film work.

Lead single “Hate That I Made You Love Me” dropped May 29 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the rollout momentum well before the album’s release. Grande has described “petal” as growing through the cracks of something cold and challenging, a framing that positions the record as a continuation of “Eternal Sunshine’s” stripped-down vulnerability rather than a stylistic reset.
Why the Retail Tie-In Matters
UMusic Shop NY opened in December 2025 as Universal Music Group’s first permanent brick-and-mortar retail location in North America, built specifically to give superfans of UMG artists — Grande included — a physical space for exclusive merchandise, vinyl and pop-up programming. The store has already run similar takeovers tied to Neil Diamond and Republic labelmate Conan Gray since opening, making the “Petal Takeover” part of an established rhythm rather than a one-off stunt.
Positioning the activation to run through the album’s actual release day gives fans a same-week reason to show up in person, turning streaming-day excitement into foot traffic and, by extension, another retail data point UMG can point to when pitching future artist takeovers at the same location.
What Comes Next
With “petal” arriving mid-tour cycle — Grande remains connected to her “Eternal Sunshine” era live dates — the album’s second single is expected to follow shortly after release. For now, all eyes are on July 31, when streaming platforms, vinyl retailers and one very busy storefront on Penn Plaza all light up at once.
