A superhero movie just rescued two songs that were sitting on the sidelines. Tame Impala’s “Loser” and Steve Lacy’s “Oh Yeah?” both landed on the Billboard Hot 100 dated August 15, riding the box-office wave of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which hit theaters July 31 and immediately became one of the biggest openings of the year.
The numbers behind the jump are hard to ignore. “Loser” earned 6.3 million chart-eligible streams in the U.S. during the week ending August 6, according to Luminate data cited by Billboard, alongside 369,000 radio audience impressions and 1,000 downloads. That streaming total marks an 1,155% surge over the previous week’s 504,000 plays, pushing the Kevin Parker-fronted track to a new peak on the chart at No. 46. It’s the song’s second stint on the Hot 100 and its best showing yet, a full nine months after it first debuted at No. 91 back in November.
Steve Lacy‘s case is even more dramatic in one sense: “Oh Yeah?” hadn’t charted on the Hot 100 at all before this week. The title track from Lacy’s third studio album collected 5.9 million streams, a 267% jump from 1.6 million the week prior, enough to debut at No. 54. The song had shown up on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart at No. 36 in early August, but the film’s box-office run was the catalyst that pushed it into the mainstream ranking. Both tracks now sit inside the top 10 of Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, with “Loser” at No. 7 and “Oh Yeah?” right behind at No. 10.
The soundtrack’s reach extends well past the Hot 100. Bad Bunny’s “EOO,” also featured in the film, re-entered Hot Latin Songs at No. 2 after streams jumped 48%, from 3.4 million to 5 million in a single week. On the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, Mrs. Green Apple’s “Brand New” climbed back in at No. 163, while “Loser” cracked that international ranking for the first time as well.
What’s happening here isn’t unusual for a blockbuster with real box-office muscle behind it. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set an all-time franchise opening with more than $167 million domestically on its first day, and industry trackers have pointed to a North American opening weekend north of $429 million. When a film performs at that scale, its soundtrack cuts tend to ride along, sometimes reviving older singles and sometimes launching new ones cold. That’s exactly the split seen here: “Loser” is a comeback story nine months in the making, while “Oh Yeah?” is a first-time Hot 100 entry that might not have happened without Sadie Sink, Tom Holland, and company filling multiplexes.
For Tame Impala, the placement adds to a strong stretch tied to 2025’s “Deadbeat,” the album that also produced the band’s first-ever Hot 100 entry with “Dracula.” For Lacy, it’s a rare mainstream foothold for a song that initially flew under the radar on release. Both artists now have tangible proof that a well-placed film credit can do what streaming algorithms sometimes can’t: introduce a song to millions of new ears in a single weekend.
