About Joseph M. Scriven

1: What a Friend we have in Jesus,
    All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
   O what peace we often forfeit,
   O what needless pain we bear,
   All because we do not carry
   Everything to God in prayer!

2: Have we trials and temptations?
   Is there trouble anywhere?
   We should never be discouraged,
   Take it to the Lord in prayer.
   Can we find a friend so faithful
   Who will all our sorrows share?
   Jesus knows our every weakness,
   Take it to the Lord in prayer.

3: Are we weak and heavy-laden,
   Cumbered with a load of care?
   Precious Savior, still our refuge—
   Take it to the Lord in prayer;
   Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
   Take it to the Lord in prayer;
   In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
   Thou wilt find a solace there.

About Joseph M. Scriven

Joseph M. Scriven was an Irish-Canadian poet and hymnodist, best known for writing the lyrics to the popular hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." He was born on September 10, 1819, in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, and later moved to Canada.

Scriven's life was marked by tragedy and personal hardship. In 1844, he was engaged to be married, but the day before the wedding, his fiancée tragically drowned. This event deeply affected Scriven and influenced his spiritual journey. He found solace in his faith and turned to writing poetry as a way to express his emotions and connect with God.

In 1855, Scriven received news that his mother in Ireland was ill. Unable to travel to be with her due to his own poor health, he wrote a comforting letter to her, which included the lyrics of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The hymn was intended as a source of comfort and encouragement during difficult times, emphasizing the idea that Jesus is a faithful and understanding friend.

"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" was initially published anonymously, and it gained popularity gradually. It wasn't until after Scriven's death that his friend, Ira D. Sankey, discovered the lyrics in a scrapbook and set them to music. Since then, the hymn has become widely known and beloved, sung in churches and recorded by numerous artists.

Joseph M. Scriven spent most of his adult life in Canada, where he lived a humble and devout existence. He dedicated his time to serving others, particularly the poor and sick. Scriven himself lived in poverty and experienced health issues throughout his life.

Joseph M. Scriven passed away on August 10, 1886, in Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. Despite his relatively unknown status during his lifetime, his legacy lives on through his hymn, which continues to bring comfort and inspiration to countless individuals around the world.
