Doomsday Glacier May Collapse Sooner than Expected as Scientists Reveal New Discovery

Thwaites, which is roughly the size of Florida, represent more than half a meter (1.6 feet) of global sea level rise potential.

According to a new study published in Nature, the Doomsday Glacier in Antarctica may collapse sooner than expected. The glacier holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by more than three meters if it were to collapse, and the researchers now fear this could happen as early as the next century.

The researchers used satellite imaging to map the glacier's current rate of ice loss and compared it to data from the last two decades. They found that the glacier's ice loss had increased by 77% since the mid-1990s and that the rate of ice loss had tripled since 2012.

The researchers also studied the glacier's underlying bedrock, which has been eroded by warm ocean water. They found that the bedrock had weakened significantly, making the glacier more vulnerable to collapse.

The melting of the Doomsday Glacier could have a devastating impact on coastal regions worldwide, leading to increased flooding and disruption of ocean currents. The researchers urge governments to take swift action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce global emissions in order to prevent a potential collapse of the glacier
