After two years away from full-length music, Ariana Grande is finally closing the gap. Her eighth studio album, “petal,” arrives July 31, and unlike most album rollouts, this one is happening in the middle of an ongoing world tour rather than building up to one.
“petal” (stylized in lowercase) is a 12-track project released through Grande’s own imprint, BabyDoll Music, in partnership with Republic Records. It was recorded between January and April 2026 across three studios — Jungle City in New York, Godzilya in Los Angeles, and MXM, which has locations in both Los Angeles and Stockholm. The Stockholm connection isn’t a coincidence: the album was executive produced and co-written by Grande alongside longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh, who has worked with her since 2018’s “Sweetener” and helped shape both “Thank U, Next” and 2024’s “Eternal Sunshine.” Rather than pulling together a wide roster of outside producers, Grande built “petal” almost entirely around that one creative partnership, the kind of long-running shorthand that tends to produce records with a single, consistent point of view rather than a patchwork of guest sessions.
Grande had been dropping hints about “petal” long before it had an official name. During a Vogue interview back in March 2025, she described herself using flower imagery, comparing her own growth to something still learning how to bloom. Fans later spotted another clue in a promotional video for her R.E.M. Beauty line, where a lip gloss named “Petal” prompted a knowing look between Grande and her mother, Joan. The album title was finally confirmed on Instagram on April 28, 2026, alongside its cover art, and in the rollout materials that followed, Grande described the project as one about growth pushing through difficult conditions — beauty that shows up even when things feel cold, hard, and hostile. In later interviews, she’s gone even further, calling parts of the record “a little feral” and describing it as coming from a more unguarded place than her past work. Together, those comments paint “petal” as a rawer, less polished follow-up to the more delicate, stripped-down mood of “Eternal Sunshine.”
The album’s only confirmed single so far, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” arrived May 29, 2026, produced by Grande alongside Salmanzadeh and pop hitmaker Max Martin — the same trio behind several of her biggest past singles. The song quickly climbed to the top of the national singles chart, giving the rollout a strong head start heading into the full release. With just one song out and 11 more still under wraps, most of “petal” remains a mystery until release day.
What makes this release especially notable is its timing. Grande is currently in the middle of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, her first major tour since 2019, which opened June 6 in Oakland and runs through September, having already sold out across North America. Most artists release an album first and tour behind it afterward. Grande is doing the reverse — dropping brand-new material while she’s still performing older songs live nearly every night, which means fans could hear “petal” tracks debut on stage within days of the album’s release.
“petal” marks Grande’s first new studio album since 2024’s “Eternal Sunshine,” which went on to earn multiple award nominations, including one for Best Pop Vocal Album, and later received an expanded edition titled “Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead” in 2025. In between albums, Grande stayed far from idle, filming “Wicked: For Good,” working on the comedy “Focker In-Law,” lending her voice to an adaptation of “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!,” and continuing to build out her R.E.M. Beauty line.
“petal” releases everywhere on Friday, July 31, with physical formats rolling out alongside the digital drop, including multiple vinyl color variants, CD, and cassette editions. Preorders are already live through Grande’s official store and select retailers. For an artist who spent the last two years splitting her time between film sets and a beauty brand, “petal” is shaping up to be the moment Grande fully returns to music — on her own terms, and without waiting for the tour to end first.
