Nobody, including Charli XCX herself, expected a new album this soon.
Barely five months after she closed out the Wuthering Heights soundtrack chapter, and roughly two years removed from the cultural juggernaut that was BRAT, the British pop provocateur has released Music, Fashion, Film — an 11-track project that arrived with almost no runway and a whole lot of intention.
She wasn’t planning on it. That’s the part that makes this drop feel different.
Speaking with The Pop Pod, Charli admitted the record caught even her off guard. She said she’s come to trust creative inspiration as something fleeting and unpredictable — a signal that has to be chased the moment it shows up, because there’s no telling when, or if, it’ll return. According to her, that’s exactly what happened here: a single idea took root unexpectedly and grew into the framework for the entire album, despite her having no intention of making one.
That kind of spontaneity has become something of a signature for Charli at this stage of her career. Where BRAT was a calculated reinvention — messy, confessional, dancefloor-ready — Music, Fashion, Film seems to be operating on instinct rather than strategy. And for an artist who’s spent over a decade shaping and reshaping her identity in public, instinct might be the more interesting move.
The Rollout Before the Record
Music, Fashion, Film wasn’t dropped cold. Charli seeded the project with four singles ahead of the full release: “Rock Music,” “SS26,” “Wink Wink,” and “Camera” — each offering a different angle into the album’s world before fans had the complete picture.
The title itself signals scope. This isn’t framed as just a pop record; it’s positioned as a statement about the industries and aesthetics that have shaped Charli’s public persona, which brings us to the cover art.
Three Icons, One Room, One Photo
The album’s cover isn’t a solo portrait. It features Charli alongside three towering figures from entirely different creative disciplines: musician John Cale, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, and filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
It’s an unusual flex, and a deliberate one.
Talking to Shaad magazine, Charli explained that despite their wildly different lanes — music, fashion, film, naturally — all three men have played a meaningful role in shaping her own creative life. Getting them together in the same room, she said, felt like a rare, almost surreal moment, one she doesn’t expect to be able to recreate. Sharing that moment with fans mattered enough to put it front and center on the record’s artwork.
That single image essentially functions as the album’s thesis statement, tying its title directly to the three-way tribute embedded in the cover.

Cronenberg, the celebrated body-horror auteur behind films like Videodrome and The Fly, isn’t a name typically associated with pop album credits — which tracks, given Charli’s history of pulling unexpected collaborators into her orbit rather than sticking to industry-standard pop features.
Why This Matters Right Now
Charli XCX has spent the last two years redefining what a mainstream pop rollout can look like, turning BRAT into as much a cultural moment as a musical one. Following that up with a film soundtrack, and now an unplanned full-length record featuring a horror director, suggests an artist who has no interest in repeating a formula — even a wildly successful one.
