Olivia Rodrigo Returns With Ambitious Third Album ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’
The pop star goes post-punk on a 13-track collection about adult relationships.

Olivia Rodrigo has released her long-awaited third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, a 13-track project that marks a notable evolution from her previous records, 2021’s SOUR and 2023’s GUTS.

The new title — a deliberate departure from the four-letter, all-caps naming pattern of her first two albums — came directly from a moment in the studio. Her longtime collaborator and co-writer Dan Nigro let the phrase slip during a casual conversation, and Rodrigo immediately recognized it as the emotional core she’d been chasing.

Musically, the 23-year-old has moved beyond the pop-punk sound she’s previously been associated with, drawing this time from post-punk influences including Depeche Mode and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The album’s most talked-about moment may be a guest appearance by Robert Smith of The Cure — one of Rodrigo’s longtime favorite bands — on the track “what’s wrong with me.”

Thematically, the record is Rodrigo’s most mature yet. In a recent interview with Dazed, she described it as a document of her first serious adult relationship — one that forced a kind of self-examination her earlier, more turbulent teenage romances never demanded.
